Cartoons of medallions in stained glass windows

A cartoon is the plan from which a stained glass window is constructed.  The cartoon is the same size as the finished window, or part of a window.  The cartoon may indicate the shape of each individual piece of glass, or the color of the piece of glass, or the desired staining upon the piece of glass; or all three: shape, color, and stain.

The cartoons for St. Matthias’ show the central medallion of each panel.  Each of those medallions contains the scene which is the subject of the panel, but do not show the borders, the dedication or other parts of the panel.

The cartoons are in tempura on butcher paper. All the cartoons are approximately 15 inches wide and 28 inches high.

Preliminary Pencil Sketches

The preliminary art work is the artist’s concept for a stained glass window. It is usually small in scale and is roughly shaped to the geometry of the window. It may be nothing more than a pencil sketch of a face, a hand or a garment. But it may also be a single figure or a grouping. The preliminary art work for Saint Matthias’ Church includes all of the above.
