Mother Delores (Elizabeth Armer) and Father John J. Prendergast co-founded the Sisters of the Holy Family in San Francisco in 1872.  By 1878, the Sisters of the Holy Family were officially recognized as a religious congregation.

The Sisters expanded beyond San Francisco with their day care centers for children, and established Saint Elizabeth’s Day Home at 136 Vine Street in San Jose.

By 1965, the City of San Jose wished to obtain the Vine Street property, and a new day care center and convent were built at 1050 Saint Elizabeth Drive.

The four stained glass windows on the south wall of the present convent were originally installed at Vine Street, and were moved to Saint Elizabeth Drive in 1965.  The origin of those windows is unknown.

Carl Huneke, Century Stained Glass Studio, San Francisco, created the four windows on the north wall for the new convent in 1965.  He carefully reproduced the style of the earlier windows so that the differences between the two sets of windows can hardly be distinguished.
