St. Ignatius Academy opened its doors in October 1855, the first private school in San Francisco.  The site was on Market Street where the Emporium now stands.

Now in its sixth location in San Francisco, St. Ignatius College Preparatory started classes in nearly completed buildings on September 15, 1969.

The Stephen Orradre Memorial Chapel was designed under the supervision of architect Richard Blanchard of Corwin Booth Associates.

Twelve brilliant faceted glass windows were created and installed in 1970 by Carl Huneke.  Inch thick glass set in a thin epoxy matrix allows the carefully chipped edges of the glass to refract light in radiant colors.  The saints depicted in the windows were Jesuits except for St. Stephen, who was selected in honor of Stephen Orradre. The donors of the windows are listed on small plaques by each window.

Two additional faceted glass windows are installed on the second floor of Archbishop McGucken Hall, in the AMDG Sacred Heart Chapel for resident clergy.  Those are the IHS and AMDG windows.
