Sacred Heart Catholic Church
1650 Lucerne Avenue
Dos Palos
Sacred Heart Church was established as a parish in 1924. Before that time, Dos Palos was a mission of Los Banos. The first church was a little wooden structure built by Presbyterians in 1903. That building was moved from a corner of the high school land to the site of the present church hall. The little wooden church with the window panes of pink, green, white and yellow served the parish until 1947.
In 1947, the new church was built next to the rectory across the street from the old building. The land under the new church, formerly the Fresno Slough, required extensive pilings driven into the sandy soil to support the new structure.
The stained glass windows of the new church were created and installed in 1965 by Carl Huneke, Century Stained Glass Studio, San Francisco. The theme of the windows included saints whose lives had meaning to the donors of the windows.
A parish school was built in 1959, and operated for 10 years until a shortage of teaching sisters, declining enrollment, and rising costs caused it to close.
The Rev. Flood Parish Hall was built on the site of the old church in 1986.
