Saint Leander Church
550 West Estudillo Avenue
San Leandro
The new St. Leander’s Church was built in 1957. The leaded stained glass windows in the sanctuary, which depict the four Evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and the Archangels Michael, and Raphael were created by Carl Huneke of Century Stained Glass Studio in San Francisco at the time the church was built.
The rose window in the choir was later installed by Henry Dombrink Studio of Oakland. That window shows Our Lady of Fatima.
In 1966, Carl Huneke of Century Stained Glass Studio in San Francisco created the lovely faceted glass windows in the nave of St. Leander’s. Faceted glass windows are inch thick glass set in thin, strong epoxy, which allows the edges of the glass to remain exposed. The edges of the glass are chipped to produce conchoidal surfaces, which brilliantly refract light, giving the windows a different radiance from each viewing position.
The windows in the church show the Joyful, Sorrowful and the Glorious Mysteries. In the chapel (formerly the bapistry) are the Baptism of Christ, John the Baptist, and Christ Raising a Child from the Dead. In the stairway to the choir are St. Leander and Mary, Queen of the Universe.
