Achim Schoolchildren - 1913

Oil on poster board - Approx. 10” x 7”
From the collection of Marge Huneke Blaine and Terry Blaine

Carl received an assignment to paint two portraits from life, showing how the subject felt, as well as how they looked. Carl painted a schoolboy and schoolgirl. The boy, about his brother Hans’ age, is whistling, hands in pockets, with a carefree air about him, not caring too much about the slate he carries or his schoolwork. The girl, about his sister Martha’s age, carries an apple in her lunch basket and is worried about an examination she must take in school that day.

Oil on textured poster board - Approx. 7" x 4 1/2"
From the collection of Marge Huneke Blaine and Terry Blaine

Carl painted a fat monk with a puckish grin, his face wreathed in cigar smoke on textured cardboard. This piece reflected his somewhat irreverent attitude about religion and priests in particular. Carl’s irreverence was not discouraged at the art school. Thought the school was traditional in its classical art training, many of the students were somewhat bohemian and the teachers did not try to alter their behavior.

Carl experimented with several techniques as practice for a painting for his daughter, Marge’s and son-in-law, Terry Blaine’s new home. The subject is the Yosemite Valley, a reminder of the place they all enjoyed so much together.

Carl and Lee traveled to the desert near Palm Springs many times. Carl loved the winter colors in the desert, when the verbena and other desert flowers bloomed. Carl found several post cards he liked and used them as models for his first acrylic painting of the desert sand, flowers and mountains.

After many years focusing on stained glass, Carl experienced a renewed interest in painting. The new materials, acrylics, had advantages over oils and he wanted to try them.
