Holy Spirit Catholic Church
37588 Fremont Boulevard
Fremont
The parish was established in 1886 as Holy Ghost Church with Fr. Domingo Governo as pastor. The original church building stood for 33 years before being destroyed by fire in 1919. The present stucco church building was completed in 1926, and was widened in 1957. The new north nave was added in 1969.
Holy Spirit Church is remarkable for its diversity of stained glass. Craftsman style lily windows in the choir were created about 1900 by an artist whose name is not known.
About 1927, Edward Laputka, Church Art Glass, San Francisco created the 20 “German style” windows in the original nave. Ten of those windows were later moved (some to larger openings) about 1957.
Carl Huneke, Century Stained Glass Studio, San Francisco, created the eight cathedral style leaded glass windows in Governo House in 1960 (it was the sister’s convent at the time).
The exquisite faceted glass window of The Baptism of Jesus, The Seven Sacraments, was donated by Msgr. Vincent I. Breen and created by Carl Huneke in 1969. That window is unique for both its size and its beauty. It almost fills the entire west wall of the church.
Mr. Huneke was also the artist for the two faceted glass windows in the rectory residences. The text in those windows is reversed so that it will be legible from the outside at night.
