Saint Jerome Catholic Church
308 Carmel Avenue
El Cerrito
The concept of a new parish to serve the growing population of El Cerrito was studied as early as 1937. The parish of Saint Jerome was established on June 21, 1941, with Fr. James J. Rohan as the pastor. The first mass in the new parish was said on July 20, 1941 in a private home.
Construction on the church started in the fall of 1941. It was designed by Martin J. Rist of San Francisco and built by Moore and Roberts. The church was dedicated on June 7, 1942.
The rose window in the choir was probably installed at the time the structure was completed in 1942. The rose design is frosted pressed glass with burnt orange flash glass background.
Carl Huneke, Century Stained Glass Studio, San Francisco created the six large stained glass windows in the nave of the church in 1952 and 1953.
About 1987, the four small round evangelist windows were created by John Lukas, Lukas Studio, Church Art Glass, San Francisco. Those windows replaced panels, which were part of the original construction and were similar in design to the rose window.
