Saint John's Episcopal Church
1190 North Forbes Street
Lakeport
Saint John’s Episcopal Church was erected in memory of John Pierre Collier, born March 28th, 1891 and died March 21st, 1896.
The wood framed, shingled exterior building designed by Willis Polk was completed in 1899. It was consecrated on July 9, 1899.
On November 7, 1986, the church building was appointed as a point of historical interest in Lake County by the State of California Historical Resources Commission.
The two stained glass windows in the Chancel were probably created at the time the church was built in 1899. The style of those windows is pictorial, with opalescent glass borders, which was popular at the end of the nineteenth century. The artist who created those windows is unknown.
The eight Sanctuary windows next to the pews were probably created by the same artist at the same time as the Chancel windows. The Sanctuary windows are amber pebbled glass leaded in quarries with opalescent glass borders.
The beautiful stained glass window “To the Glory of God” at the rear of the Sanctuary was created by Carl Huneke, Century Stained Glass Studio, San Francisco, in 1965. That window is in the style of the great cathedrals of Europe.
