Saint Edward Catholic Church
5788 Thornton Avenue
Newark
The original Saint Edward’s church was built in 1880. The land and most of the funds for construction were donated by Senator James G. Fair, a railroad magnate, who had just completed a narrow gauge railroad to Newark. The church was an ornate wood Victorian structure with a single tall steeple centered on the front. The bell from that steeple now stands near the west entrance to the church. The old church still stands at the corner of Graham and Sycamore.
Saint Edward’s was made a parish in 1920 with Father John F. Casey as pastor. A rectory was built for Fr. Casey in 1921. The school was established in 1963.
The present steel, reinforced concrete and stucco church was designed and built by Reardon Construction Company. A new rectory was also built. Work was completed in 1958.
The beautiful stained glass windows in the church were created at that time by Carl Huneke, Century Stained Glass Studio, San Francisco. The chapel window, which was salvaged from the old church, was restored and installed in its present location by Mr. Huneke.
In 2001, Ray Centanni, Great Panes Architectural Glass, Calistoga once again restored the chapel window.
