Our Lady of Angels Church
1721 Hillside Drive
Burlingame
Our Lady of Angels was established as a parish in 1926, to serve the growing population on the peninsula. Archbishop Edward Joseph Hanna invited the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin (Capuchin Franciscans) to administer the Parish. Fr. Thomas Dowling came from Ireland to Burlingame to be the pastor.
The first church was a remodeled social hall. In the first year of the new parish, the school had 32 students in classrooms in an old house.
The present church building was designed by San Francisco architect Martin Rist. It was built by Burlingame general contractor Williams and Burroughs. The new church was dedicated on November 5, 1950. Father Cornelius Hyland was the Pastor who initiated building the new church.
The beautiful stained glass windows in the church were created from 1951 to 1953 by Carl Huneke, Century Stained Glass Studio, San Francisco.
The rectory was also designed by Martin Rist, and was built by O. C. Moroney in 1951. Carl Huneke also created the stained glass windows in the rectory.
