Sacred Heart Church Convent Chapel
1301 Cooper Street
Turlock
Sacred Heart Church was established as a mission in 1888 and became a parish in 1910. The original church was a brick building built in 1911, and demolished in 1971 to provide space for the modern, concrete structure which now serves the parish.. The brass bell cast by the McShane Bell Foundry in Baltimore in 1911 still stands on the church grounds.
The Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary came to Turlock from England in 1954. The convent was a private residence converted for the use of the sisters. The chapel was originally the garage of that home.
In 1960, as a surprise Christmas gift to the sisters, the Sacred Heart Dad’s Club commissioned a small stained glass window for the chapel. That window is the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, the insignia of the order. The window was created by Carl Huneke, Century Stained Glass Studio, San Francisco.
The modern church was designed by Turlock architect Gilbert Goulart, and was completed in 1972. The dalle glass windows in the church were created for the church in 1971 by Willit Windows.
